The Duchess

I recently realised how cynical and sarky I've become when it comes to period films which, to be fair, is a reasonable sentiment given Hollywood's track record with historical flicks. But I didn't hate The Duchess (starring Keira Knightley). I thought I would. Or at least I thought there'd be a decent number of lip-curls-of-derision. But no, I actually kinda, sorta, well, liked it.
And this is the thing: Keira Knightley decked out in elaborate outfits didn't annoy me. She looked good and she pulled it off without making it look like a fashion show for corsetry and ridiculously large dresses.
Sure, she delivered a few of her mega signature pouts. But I didn't feel like throwing my bag of chocolate Freckles at the screen at any point in the film.
This won't do at all. I'm not sure how to cope with a tolerable Keira Knightley. And Hollywood actually delivering a decent period piece leaves me feeling a bit unbalanced and unsure (granted, the history in it has probably been twisted and turned more than a cheese and spinach twirl from Baker's Delight).
Still. I didn't hate The Duchess. I admit that I could even watch it again when it's out on DVD. I hope this isn't setting a precedent.
